World of Warcraft’s denizens

Player housing is something that World of Warcraft’s denizens have wanted for years. But in WoW’s upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion, Blizzard is going to do them one better. Instead of giving you a dinky plot of land and a grass shack to use as storage, Warlords’ version of player-owned real estate is a literal fortress. They’re called Garrisons, and while I didn’t get to set foot in one just yet, talking about them with creative director Alex Afrasiabi got me pumped to finally own a piece of Azeroth (or in this case, Draenor).

Establishing your Garrison will be the first big undertaking of your Warlords of Draenor journey, acting as a central hub amidst all the new content. “It’s going to be your anchor point for the expansion,” says Afrasiabi–and because it’ll grow with your character, building up your Garrison will give you a sense of ownership and a huge extra layer of depth. See, your Garrison isn’t a one-hero stronghold. As you journey through Draenor, you’ll recruit NPC followers to your cause who will set up camp at your place and go out on missions. “We want to make your Garrison feel alive,” says Afrasiabi. “Seeing NPCs–cool ones, that you like, and that you know–doing cool things.”

Garrisons will be an integral feature in Warlords of Draenor, and I’m dying to know more about the nitty-gritty ways in which your Garrison can be personalized and expanded. I do know one thing for certain: This is the first time I’ve ever felt genuinely excited about player-owned property in an MMO.
