The defender rejoined the Catalans from Manchester United in the summer of 2008 after four years at Old Trafford and has since established himself as a driving force in the Catalans’ recent successes, most notably under Pep Guardiola.

“I love this profession more and more each day. I’d like to play for many more years,” he mused to Cadena Cope.

“For now, I can tell you that I’m going to retire at [Barca], either at the end of the season or in six years’ time. I won’t play for another team.

“[Pep] Guardiola trains and motivates players like no other. He left his mark on the club and all the players.”

Pique did not enjoy a fruitful start to 2014-15, however, as he suffered a dip in form and was involved in an angry confrontation with police last October among other off-field misdemeanours, both of which he admitted had ‘affected’ him.

“My objective is becoming the best centre-back in the world, but it all depends on me,” he added.

“This season I’ve been through some tough situations. The beginning of the season was not desirable because I had two or three incidents on the pitch.

“Luis Enrique didn’t give me the continuity he’s giving me now. [When you don’t play], it’s very difficult to prove that you’re in good shape, plus the off-field incidents affected me.”
